Fuck you for making me drive a pink car for six days.
Oil came out looking like, well, oil, so I at least didn’t outright blow a head gasket when it overheated. I still sent the oil out for analysis though, just to be safe.
This is the culprit. There’s a tiny pinprick hole right there where this coolant hose had been hanging against the AC pulley.
The radiator surround has now been overkill fastened to it s mount so this should never happen again.

Weird how often A/C pulleys somehow get in contact with coolant lines. I’ve seen it happen several times personally, last about two months ago.

In my case, the coolant hose runs along and is clipped to the radiator surround. A plastic bracket that holds down the radiator surround broke with age which allowed the surround to wiggle enough to put the hose into contact with the pulley.
There’s not a lot of clearance in my engine bay. I could never see this happening with, say, our Wrangler.

My car wore a hole in the lower hose where it was making contact with the A/C compressor. An extra heat shield and large zip tie later, and I’ve got over 100k on that repair.

I’m guessing by the end of the hose it is a BMW part. If it is... keep emptying that pocket. Bavarian cars munch money unlike any other easily-attainable car. Sadly the cooling systems need complete overhauls more frequently than other vehicles. Thank god they’re amazing vehicles, otherwise they’d be all be tossed in the trash after 100k miles.

Mine’s cost me no more than any other car I’ve owned. I've only spent $150 on parts this year.

This is why I’ll never own another BMW, they know damn well the cars won’t hold up over the long haul .

The engines, body, and most of the interior does quite well. It’s anything coolant related, electrical, and all suspension bushings that will kill your savings.

The only work it’s needed this year are a new PCV valve, some s way bar links, and this hose. Everything else I’ve spent on it has just been regular maintenance. She's got 261k miles on the clock and counting.

Agreed, and these are long standing/well known issues that BMW refuses to address. A premium product should be designed and built with longevity in mind, you’re paying top dollar.

My theory is that all parts are built to a sweet spot. Whereas a cheaper car uses a bushing made from recycled dental implants, the BMW used bushings made from compacted memory foam pillows. Unfortunately the BMW units wear out faster as they were made to be comfortable from day one.

Water pump and radiator were replaced shortly before I got the car and I’ve replaced most other cooling components save a few hoses since. It’s been surprisingly cheap to own since I can do most minor stuff myself. I spend more on insurance than maintenance.
It helps that I only drive like 5k miles per year. I'm probably going to be this car's last owner so I intend to keep it as long as possible.

Hopefully they installed a metal impeller water pump. The plastic ones can break from the shaft.
I don’t drive much either. Enjoy it. BMWs are excellent vehicles regardless of the nay-sayers.

If they did put in a plastic one I’ve probably still got another 80k before it becomes a problem.
In all likelihood this is the best car I'll ever own. I'm not in a hurry get rid of it.

Preventive maintenance should have caught this.
